Individuals and families in Ukraine are facing a humanitarian crisis as they are forced to leave their homes and seek shelter. The UN estimates that at least 2 million refugees have fled Ukraine into neighboring countries and Eastern Europe.
Nonprofits across the world are mobilizing and taking action to support the people of Ukraine. They are on the ground providing critical supplies like shelter, food, water, and medicine. Their work is saving lives.
If you’re looking for immediate ways to help, here are eight Spiral nonprofit partners who are responding to the crisis unfolding in Ukraine and providing critical relief. Read below and follow three easy steps to make an impact today.
MADRE
MADRE is an international women’s human rights organization and feminist fund. They partner with community-based women’s groups worldwide facing war and disaster.
MADRE is making emergency grants to frontline women leaders in Ukraine to ensure directly impacted communities have access to food, medicine, and other essential goods and services.
International Medical Corps (IMC)
IMC is a global first responder that delivers emergency medical and related services to those affected by conflict, disaster, and disease. IMC also trains people in their communities, providing them with the skills they need to recover, chart their own path to self-reliance, and become effective first responders themselves.
IMC is on the ground in Ukraine, has created a logistics and support hub in Poland, and is working with health agencies and local partners to provide the following relief services:
- Primary and emergency health services from medical professionals
- Mental health and psychosocial support
- Gender-based violence response services, and protection services for women, children, and other at-risk people
- Medical supplies to provide care and prevent infectious diseases
United Way Worldwide
United Way fights for the health, education, and financial stability of every person in every community.
United Way is raising funds to support their partners on the ground and who are supporting Ukrainian refugees in neighboring countries—United Way Hungary, United Way Romania, and FDI Poland. As families migrate to safety across Europe, these partners stand ready to aid those who have been displaced by this crisis. The immediate support will cover:
- Transportation
- Shelter
- Food and medicines
- Critical childcare supplies, including infant formula and diapers
- Hygiene kits, and more
Action Against Hunger
Action Against Hunger (AAH) is leading a global movement to end hunger in our lifetimes.
Action Against Hunger has experience working in Ukraine and, together with their partners, they are assessing the situation and exploring the most effective ways to respond to humanitarian needs. They are also sending exploratory missions to Poland and Moldova to evaluate how they can help meet the needs of refugees. Early reports indicate that the most urgent humanitarian needs are for cash, mental health services, healthcare, water, sanitation, and hygiene.
All Hands and Hearts
All Hands and Hearts addresses the immediate and long-term needs of communities impacted by natural disasters by engaging local volunteers.
They have deployed a team to Poland to support Ukrainian refugees. Activated and inspired by the personal efforts of their co-founder Petra Nemcova and members of their board who mobilized to support the transportation of unaccompanied minors at risk, they are leveraging their proven disaster response abilities to assist in this extraordinary event. While on the ground, their team is liaising with local partners, coordinating bodies, and relief organizations to assess how best to increase their support.
The American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee (JDC)
The JDC is the leading global Jewish humanitarian organization.
Ukraine’s vibrant Jewish community is one of the largest in the world, home to an estimated 200,000 Jews. In more than 1,000 locations across Ukraine, JDC is providing a lifeline for an estimated 40,000 Jewish elderly and 2,500 poor Jewish children and their families through its network of care services, Jewish community programs, and Jewish leaders.
American Friends of Georgia (AFG)
AFG supports the health, education, social welfare, and economic security of the Georgian people.
AFG is raising funds to aid Ukrainian refugees in Georgia and to assist their Georgian office in collecting and transporting emergency supplies to Ukrainians who remain at home. AFG and Together for Real Changes have opened their centers for free housing, and funds are needed for fuel, food, and supplies for the families.
Food for Life Global (Ukraine)
Food For Life Global’s mission is bringing peace and prosperity to the world by distributing plant-based meals to those in need.
Their affiliates in Ukraine, specifically Food for Life Ukraine, are distributing hot meals to those affected by the crisis. They are also working with their partners on the border of Ukraine to provide warm plant-based meals to refugees and their animals.
